The Position
This position leads and directs the Ethics & Compliance (E&C) Business Partners and Privacy Office for North America. This role serves as a leader in the E&C function and operates as a thought-starter, helping to ensure that the E&C function takes a holistic view of ethics and compliance risk management, considering broad organizational priorities as well as external insights. This position assists in development and execution of the E&C strategy throughout the organization and provides additional leadership in E&C Department as requested by the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer (CECO) or in their absence.


Relationships
Reports to Corporate Vice President (CVP) - Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer (CECO) for North America. Manages a team of compliance professionals, including Business Partners and Privacy Office. Serves as member of the Ethics & Compliance Leadership Team. May serve as a member of global forums and committees. Provides support to Novo Nordisk Inc (NNI’s) Executive Team, senior management within corporate and global headquarters, and other key customers group(s).

Internal relationships include in-house legal counsel, global compliance colleagues, senior leaders throughout lines of business. External relationships include government agencies, outside counsel, consultants and industry peers.


Essential Functions
  • Directly supports the CECO with the oversight and execution of the Ethics & Compliance Program against strategic priorities
  • Raises awareness of the Program and fosters accountability for ethics and integrity throughout the organization
  • Fosters a continuous improvement mindset and proposes enhancements to the Program informed by industry trends and best practices
  • Champion a proactive approach to ethics and compliance that is focused on partnership, prevention and risk mitigation
  • Participates in industry associations and engagements to raise the profile of the Ethics & Compliance Program and the company
  • Oversees development and implementation of a strategy for Business Partner function informed by organizational priorities and risk
  • Ensures a proactive approach to supporting business execution by identifying, assessing and mitigating organizational risk, including development and implementation of remediation plans in partnership with the business
  • Drives collaboration with other E&C functions as Business Partner team is critical to pulling through E&C priorities across all program elements (e.g., training, monitoring, government obligations)
  • Ensures Business Partners collaborate and share relevant information within department to drive a holistic approach to trend and risk management
  • Member of relevant leadership teams across Novo Nordisk to incorporate ethics and compliance into strategic and tactical planning and foster an ethical mindset
  • Leads the planning, design and implementation of an effective privacy program for North American affiliates
  • Responsible for ensuring the privacy program meets government expectations, including risk assessments, policies and procedures, training, and monitoring and auditing
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining effective privacy governance and reporting across NNI and North American affiliates
  • Drives alignment and coordination with Novo Nordisk’s Global Privacy Office to ensure harmonization with global privacy program
  • Leads and directs the Business Partners in developing training plans and content, ensuring a "proactive" risk-based approach to E&C education and training activities

Development of People
Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process.

Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.


Physical Requirements
10-20% overnight travel required.


Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required. Additional education/certification within the compliance and health-care related fields is preferred
  • A minimum of 15 years combined pharmaceutical, legal, regulatory, and compliance experience required OR a minimum of 13 years’ experience required if accompanied by an advanced degree or certification (e.g. MBA, JD, PMP)
  • Uncompromising ethics and high standard of personal integrity
  • Experience working under a Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA) is preferred
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and exceptional ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act, Food & Drug Administration (FDA) rules and regulations regarding the promotion of pharmaceuticals, corporate integrity agreements and other prosecution agreements with other pharmaceutical companies, PhRMA code and the current activities and developments involving pharmaceutical sales and marketing
  • Demonstrated knowledge and clear understanding of the required elements of effective ethics and compliance programs as outlined in the Health & Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) Compliance Program Guidance and the US Federal Sentencing Guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective strategic relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead change in a large, matrix organization
  • Communicates effectively with different audiences and in different contexts
  • Ability to drive multiple projects to completion meeting internal and external deliverables with high degree of accuracy
  • Prior experience managing professionals required
  • The ability to think objectively and use sound reasoning principles
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence at all levels of the organization
