The Position
Handles complex intellectual property (IP) and related corporate and legal issues with minimal to moderate guidance. Identifies and aggressively pursues strategies and actions for global patent protection. May be responsible for maintaining comprehensive patent portfolios on Novo Nordisk inventions. May handle IP issues relating to major transactions. Typically advises Vice Presidents (VPs), managers, associate directors and directors.


Relationships
Reports to Vice President of Intellectual Property (IP). Interacts with department colleagues and various departments within Novo Nordisk. Also interacts with government agencies, law firms, trade organizations, and other external agencies. Interacts with senior management at NNI, headquarters, and/or other affiliates as required to drive business and set strategy.


Essential Functions
  • Acts as spokesperson for Novo Nordisk’s IP function by making presentations to internal stakeholders and by speaking in public forums
  • Advises clients on all intellectual property-related matters with minimal to moderate guidance. Advises on complex research collaborations, validity, infringements, freedom to operate, patentability opinions, keeping a close working relationship with the research and marketing arms of the Company
  • Drafts, reviews and may negotiate license agreements that involve intellectual property, as well as confidentiality/material transfer agreements, consultant agreements, and cooperative research agreements
  • Handles all aspects of patent prosecution without guidance, including evaluating invention disclosures, drafting applications, responding to Office Actions, and overseeing compliance with prosecution procedures
  • Participates in litigation activities as requested
  • Performs other legal, administrative and corporate duties upon request

Qualifications
  • A J.D. and degree in biology or chemistry (preferably an advanced degree and most preferably a Ph.D. or M.D. degree) with 6+ years plus of patent attorney experience in biotechnology patent prosecution and opinion work, preferably at least 3 years in private practice
  • A State Bar admission and registration before U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Effective time management skills. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry preferred though not required
  • Requires effective communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with other client groups within the company, including Headquarters and other affiliates as required. Should be considered a legal expert in the intellectual property area
