Job Description PURPOSE:
The Senior Manager, Federal Affairs augments the Sr. Director, Federal Affairs in all aspects of Novo Nordisk’s federal agenda, particularly strategic goals, management involvement, and resource recommendations related to the Novo Nordisk Political Action Committee, trade associations, consultants, and documentation and publication tools. This position will focus on communicating, advocating, and executing Novo Nordisk’s positions on federal legislation and policy. This position will also support company-wide healthcare reform implementation efforts and miscellaneous Public Affairs issues on an ad hoc basis. This position further serves as one of the company’s primary contacts/advocates responsible for communicating and promoting the company’s positions directly to Congress.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Senior Director, Government Affairs. Interacts with many external parties but primarily members of the federal legislative branch, contractors working for Novo Nordisk and other entities, and trade associations. Interacts with various people internally, both in Princeton and Copenhagen, particularly senior staff members involved in forming Novo Nordisk’s positions on public policy issues. This position is based in the Washington, D.C. office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Impacts government policy by ensuring that government officials, legislative committees and other relevant parties are aware of Novo Nordisk’s position on public affairs issues of importance to the Company. Interacts directly with Members of Congress and their staffs on behalf of Novo Nordisk. Advocates the incorporation of Novo Nordisk’s position into federal legislation of importance to the Company.

Collaborates on the development and execution of plans of action and communicates Novo Nordisk’s position on a wide variety of public policy issues to key government officials and other entities to gain favorable and active support towards the advancement of Novo Nordisk positions on public issues.

Participates in cross-functional work teams, often in a leadership role, to stimulate effective collaboration and ensure progress toward Novo Nordisk legislative objectives. Works to avoid or minimize government decisions that could negatively affect our business and stakeholders.

Assists in federal grassroots and Novo Nordisk Political Action Committee (PAC) activities of Novo Nordisk, incorporating NN employee and patient lobbying activities and events into strategic planning.

At the direction of the Senior Director, Government Affairs, helps represent Novo Nordisk at federal government affairs functions within – including but not limited to - PhRMA, BIO, Organization for International Investment (OFII), Healthcare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ), and Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) on matters of federal legislation.

Represents NNI at many Hill-related special events with the goal to improve the visibility of Novo Nordisk on the Hill, such as events that require evening participation and/or “booths” hosted by organizations such as, HLC, HINJ, American-Danish Business Council.

Designs and executes relevant Novo Nordisk Capitol Hill-related events and regular communications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Approximately 20% overnight travel
Travel required, including travel to Novo Nordisk’s Princeton office.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

* A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years’ experience required
* 7+ years of experience of federal legislative or public policy making activities, preferably in healthcare, including working with the federal legislative branches or specific work on Capitol Hill
* Ability to effectively analyze, write and deliver information, and explain, advocate and negotiate positions and issues to a broad spectrum of individuals required
* Demonstrated track record of strong advocacy and communications skills
* Knowledge of healthcare policy, FDA, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, tax, intellectual property and related issues preferred
* Previous experience working with relevant congressional committees preferred
* Results-focused – prior track record required
* Understanding of healthcare and pharmaceutical industry issues required
