Associate Director,- Digital Therapeutics Research Job

PURPOSE:

Device R&D (DRD) has established a device research organisation in Seattle, US Device Research (USDR), with the purpose to explore and develop products with the potential to add value to patients and Novo Nordisk future business within therapeutic areas covered by Novo Nordisk corporate strategy. The Assoc. Director Digital Therapeutics Data Science is responsible for driving a team of data scientists, data analysts, SW engineers, etc. to explore and develop digital therapeutics data science solutions for patients living with diabetes and/or obesity. The Associate Director (AD) position holds a combined project and line management responsibility.

RELATIONSHIPS:

The AD reports to the VP for USDR and is part of USDR management team.
The AD will have 6-15 direct reports (professionals, specialists), as well as 2-5 indirect reports (consultants, interns and students), and manage relationships with external partners. To reach alignment of diverse and often contradictory requirements from stakeholders it will require flexibility, compromise in negotiations and a sense of diplomacy, as well as an ability to convince others of new concepts and ideas.
Internal stakeholders
The AD manages productive networks with internal partners at all levels of the business. Strong interface with senior level management concerning matters of importance to the Company. Collaborates with local/global cross-functional teams as needed.
The AD will communicate to stakeholders about the project, and get relevant input from stakeholders to ensure feasible solutions, reach alignment and support to project scope among stakeholders.
External stakeholders
Ability to effectively represent Novo Nordisk in external settings (collaborators, partners, conferences); serves as company spokesperson on advanced technical matters. Seeks out, builds, and maintains trusting and collaborative relationships and alliances with others inside and outside of the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for identifying new unmet needs, innovation opportunities within digital therapeutics, and driving research of a portfolio of SaMD digital therapeutics projects.
  • Responsible for securing that dedicated patentable innovations are made according to DRD device portfolio strategy and NN digital health ambition.
  • The work is planned and carried out independently based on targets agreed upon by USDRmgmt, DRDmgmt, and Digital Health IT and commercial team.
  • Planning of and follow-up on activities with external collaborators including subcontractors, and consultants.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation within digital therapeutics.
  • Identify and select technologies and companies for possible external collaborations to secure a competitive digital health product portfolio.
  • Innovation is created from the team based on input from various sources and collaborations and holds to potential to be a future Novo Nordisk offering.
  • Making project presentations to USDRmgmt, DRDmgmt and Digital Health IT and commercial teams.
  • Responsible for project and LoB costs within own department.
  • The AD leads a research project team in the research and exploration of new innovative devices from early idea to development opportunity.
  • It is the responsibility of the AD to ensure that project deliverables are delivered according to schedule and budget, and according to requirements from relevant quality management system, as needed.
  • The AD will build and lead a cross-functional group to manage digital health project activities within NN. The team will include competencies from data science, machine learning, predictive algorithms, cognitive computing, UI/UX design, and mobile app development.:
  • The AD will have all line responsibilities of ensuring 1:1s with the team, executing all people processes e.g. performance appraisals, IDP processes etc.
  • The AD will be responsible for the motivation and dedication of the project team, ensuring and driving high performance.
  • Participate in USDRmgmt activities
  • The AD will occasionally present the project for other NN areas and project stakeholders.

Qualifications:
  • Academic degree, BSc/MSc or similar within a relevant technical area, e.g. mathematics, engineering or other scientific education.
  • Experience Level: 5+ years of relevant experience if PhD, 8+ years if M.Sc. and 10+ if B.Sc. Advanced degree may be substituted for experience as appropriate.
  • 5+ years of experience with several of DRD’s core competences e.g. lean leadership, technical innovation, medical device development, software development, scouting, digital therapeutics, bioinformatics, and/or digital health.
  • 5+ years of experience working with company and/or academic partnerships.
  • Within digital health including digital therapeutics: Demonstrates thought leadership on a global (NN) level; and influences Device R&D and global (NN) strategy. Successful leadership and management of strategic projects
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency in digital health and digital therapeutics along with some breadth of knowledge in other disciplines; demonstrate proven success setting direction, developing others, and creating strategic direction/plans.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of the business environment and industry practices, applying that knowledge to best support the business with appropriate data / information. Maintains in-depth knowledge of current scientific practices and thinking, applying such knowledge to develop strategic plans and tactics in support of the USDR needs and interests within digital health.
  • Initiates and provides leadership for strategic programs at a global scale. Acts as recognized authority within the digital health opportunity landscape.
  • Specific or technical job skills: Software as Medical Device (SaMD) development, medical device development, dosing algorithms predictive algorithms, project management, technical innovation, software development, SCRUM development, bioinformatics and/or patenting activities.
  • Demonstrates a complete working understanding of own function along with the products, services and processes within SaMD development and digital health.
  • Applies strong analytical capabilities to investigate ongoing issues and develop solutions.
  • Oral and written English skills on negotiation level. Experience with stakeholder management. Experience with presentations and professional communication.
