PURPOSE:

Provides strong in vitro biology, pharmacology and safety support for new target and early drug discovery programs in Obesity Research. Position is responsible for research experiments and data integrity as assigned by management. Under guidance, this individual must be able to participate in the design and implementation of experiments specializing in cell culture/cell biology/signaling/assay development or metabolic phenotyping in rodents.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to a member of the Obesity Research Unit leadership team. Internal relationships include working with research employees, project managers at the Seattle research facility, as well relationships with colleagues in other Novo Nordisk units worldwide. External relationships include biotech, academic and CRO partners in the obesity research and drug discovery/development community, including key opinion leaders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Demonstrates a breadth of knowledge and skills to provide in vitro biology or in vivo pharmacology support for drug discovery efforts in Obesity Research. Assists in achieving business goals, shares learnings, knowledge and skills, and promotes cross-functional teamwork. Complete assignments of limited scope and complexity requiring a strong understanding and knowledge of techniques and practices related to the research area.
  • Ensures data integrity. Conducts data collection and routine data analysis.
  • Ensures proper documentation of experimental data. Maintains laboratory notebooks.
  • Identifies the correct methods and performs calculations for sample preparation. In collaboration with the research scientist, designs and performs laboratory research experiments.
  • Manages site inventory. Orders laboratory supplies and equipment. Maintains the laboratories and performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Works with Scientists to ensure better practice sharing and implementation within the lab.
  • Performs in vitro biology research to support multiple target discovery efforts. Demonstrates a high level of proficiency and understanding in area of cell culture and assay development
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Approximately 5% overnight travel. Flexibility and willingness to adjust work hours as required by research needs. Some weekend and holiday work may be required.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2+ years of experience required; Associate degree with 4+ years’ relevant experience may also be considered. Relevant experience is defined by the role as defined below.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong organization skills, careful attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and protocols precisely and reliably, and ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • The candidate must be able to multitask, be highly motivated, innovative and a strong team player.
  • Ability to manage large numbers of samples and independently track progress through varying stages of a process or project.
  • Experience in aseptic cell culture technique with knowledge of in vitro cell culture procedures, including standard cell culture techniques, primary cell culture and generation of stable cell lines.
  • Develop and conduct cell based and in vitro biochemical signaling assays.
  • Experience with cell based GPCR signaling assays and in vitro pharmacology would be a plus.
  • Experience in designing and executing cell-based screens in HTS format is also a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with molecular biology techniques and analysis, such as: RNA and DNA extraction techniques; Quantitative PCR; Western Blot analysis; Experience working with rodent tissues also a plus.
